Terry M. Norton, DVM
Director and Veterinarian
Dr. Norton earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University; Boston and Grafton, MA, and his Bachelor of Science from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM. He did an internship in small animal medicine and surgery in Washington, DC and then moved onto Gainesville, Florida where he completed a two year residency in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine at the University of Florida. Dr. Norton became a Diplomat in the American College of Zoological Medicine in 1992.
In addition to providing veterinary care for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center programs, Dr. Norton works on St. Catherines Island, Georgia, where he provides medical, surgical, and preventative health care for a wide range of captive mammals, birds, and reptiles. Dr. Norton also provides veterinary support and conducts health related research for various conservation organizations in Georgia (e.g. Georgia Department of Natural Resources, United States Fish and Wildlife Service). Between 1999 and 2007, Dr. Norton was awarded twelve research grants and participated in numerous collaborative research projects providing health assessments, anesthetic and surgical expertise. Dr. Norton is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Florida, North Carolina State University and the University of Georgia Colleges of Veterinary Medicine; is the author of 35 published articles and has served on many national committees. Dr. Norton is an associate editor for the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine. Dr. Norton organizes and teaches workshops that are presented to the general public, teachers, local veterinary associations, zoos, local universities, veterinary schools, scientific meetings, and conservation groups. He enjoys working with all wildlife but has a true passion for working with all types of turtles, tortoises and terrapins.
