If you haven’t already navigated through all the ins and outs of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center’s new website, check out our newest addition- custom GSTC puzzles powered by Jigsaw Planet! Now, you may not be a fan of traditional, table-top puzzles, but once you try these digital brain teasers, you’ll be hooked.

They’re even great for kids- developing hand eye coordination and no messy cleanup. We’ve been adding new puzzles each day, featuring our present patients and a few past, as well as fun photos like Scute, the GSTC Loggerhead mascot. So how do you get there? From our homepage, click on GSTC Kids, choose Puzzles from the left-side menu, click on the puzzle you’d like to try and let the fun begin! You can even see an image of the completed puzzle while you’re piecing it together. A word to the wise: Choose Griffin the Loggerhead and Kermit the Green when you have more than a minute to spare. They’re a challenge!

This month we are welcoming 2 new education interns to the Geogia Sea Turtle Center, Liz and Whitney. Our husbandry intern, Rachel, and one of the education interns, Teddy, will both be joining us for another four months.

Hi! My name is Teddy. I am originally from Athens, GA where I attended the University of Georgia. I am looking forward to a second wonderful internship at the GSTC!
Hello! My name is Liz and I am a junior at Penn State University. I am studying Elementary Education and have taken many classes in environmental education. I developed a love of teaching about animals while volunteering at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center in State College, Pennsylvania. I am taking the semester off of school to work in Jekyll Island and share my love of animals with visitors to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. I hope to increase my knowledge about sea turtles and gain valuable experience for the future.
Hey ya’ll!! My name is Whitney and I am from Newnan, Ga. I graduated from The University of West Georgia with a degree in Biology. I have always loved turtles, so having this opportunity to be involved with helping sea turtles is going to be an experience of a lifetime for me. I hope to learn a lot and be an intregral part of the GSTC team.
Hello! My name is Rachel. I am from Boalsburg, Pennsylvania and am the current husbandry intern here at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. In May I graduated from Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA with a degree in Environmental Science. Last summer I developed a love for sea turtles as an intern at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on Topsail Island in North Carolina. Here I hope to expand my knowledge of sea turtles and help get them back out into the wild.

I know, I know! It’s a little late to be talking about Halloween festivities, but right around the time of Turtleween, we revamped our website and blog, and….well….we never shared the success of the event with you! Not to mention the non-scary Turtleween fun that was had by all. So even though it’s 2009 and you’ve already read about Santa’s visit with the sea turtles, let’s revisit October 2008!
Our 2nd annual Turtleween marked the first repeat event for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center! We hosted many of the same activities as our pilot event in 2007 and added several new creations just for fun. Festival goers created one-of-a-kind milkshakes at Griffin’s Medication Station and visited our Sea Turtle Sea-metery under the Jellyfish Forest to learn about passed patients. And what would be a GSTC event without recycled crafts?! Make & take fossils were crafted from used coffee grounds (courtesy of Starbucks at Altama) and each guest chose their favorite color to make a sea turtle shaped crayon at our recycled crayon laboratory!
A great time was had by all! A huge thanks goes out to our staff and volunteers-we couldn’t have done it without you!

Want to know how YOU can help raise money for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center? It’s easy, and won’t cost you a penny…just use GoodSearch.com! GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up! You can also read about GoodSearch in the NY Times, Oprah Magazine, CNN, ABC News and the Wall Street Journal.
The GSTC just signed up with Goodsearch in December 2008 and already we’ve earned $13.97! Imagine how much we can earn if EVERYONE uses Goodsearch.com and chooses the GSTC! You can even download a Goodsearch toolbar and/or email footers!
Just go to http://www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter ‘Georgia Sea Turtle Center’ as the charity you want to support. Or you can use this link: http://www.goodsearch.com/?charityid=890506
