Golden Boy, the debilitated turtle that was rescued last summer, rehabbed at Sea World Orlando and brought here June 7th for his final pre-release treatment is ready to return to his ocean home! The time isn’t yet confirmed, but I wanted to give you as much information as we have now so you can make plans to be here if you can. Early on Thursday, July 19th, a satellite transmitter will be attached to Golden Boy and later that day he will be released on the beach here on Jekyll Island. Keep watching this BLOG and the newspapers for more information!
Here’s Nick decked out in his patriotic colored vet-wrap in honor of Independence Day.
By the way, Jeannie (one of our Aquarists) tried to “broadcast feed” him today (that’s where we just throw a couple of pieces of food in the tank for the turtles to find and eat). Although he didn’t eat anything he DID turn right around and go after the pieces of squid and fish as if he could smell them. That’s a great sign since we didn’t know if his head injury might have caused any neural damage that affected his ability to smell or taste food.
Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

We’ve been very busy here at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center these first two weeks. Lots of visitors have come to see the exhibits and our patients. Here’s a photo from this morning of a group watching Nick being tube fed his “fish milkshake.” Nick is doing better by the day though we are still only cautiously optimistic about his full recovery.
If you haven’t been here yet, what are you waiting for?
